"Making Yarn Where Texas Was Born!"
Welcome to our farmstead!
We are a distinctive, indie-craft fiber mill located in the historic village of Independence- right in the heart of boots and bluebonnets, outside Brenham, Texas.
The Lone Star State has a long and rich history of producing exceptional wool and mohair. Our driving passion in the mill is to showcase our state's natural fibers, and in doing so, promote and preserve our sheep and goat ranching heritage. The wool and mohair found in our yarns is sourced from Texas legacy ranches, each fleece hand curated. Our fibers are traceable - each labeled with a known "Pasture of Origin"- providing a strong sense of place for the handcraft artist.
While sheep and goat fibers are our focus, we also proudly support the Texas fiber shed with custom processing for the wide range of other fleece animals.
We are Paul and Dawn Brown, and along with the mill, we reside on the farm with our herd of angora and pygora goats, a small flock of colored rambouillet sheep, numerous barn cats, a few chickens, and some wonderful dogs.
In a lovely old building on the farm, we found the perfect home for our mill. It is soundly built of cedar, stone and brick. Over the years, we have only improved upon the foundation of great bones this building provided us.
Our mill equipment is from Belfast International Spinners, and includes washing/scouring system, picker, large carder, dehairer/fiber separator, draw frame, core yarn maker, 8 spindle spinner, 4 spindle spinner/plyer, cone winder/steamer, skein winder, and wet felting machine. We can provide semi-worsted processing.
At this time, we are only open by appointment, and do on occasion have dates for private tours. Visits to the mill are scheduled around our need for maintaining production and attending trade show events. In the future, we hope to have regular open mill days.
Please contact us if you would like to learn more about the history of Texas wool and mohair, or to schedule a stop by the Mill House Yarn Shop and Little Texas Tea Room- have a chat about wool, sip custom blended teas, and knit your next project with a Texas born yarn!
